World Gold Council CEO Blasts Bitcoin, Predicts It Goes to Zero – Bitcoin News

Key Takeaways

David Tait said that bitcoin could eventually go to zero.Gold holding near $4,400 reflects central-bank buying and sovereign-debt concerns.Investors watch bitcoin correlation, IBIT flows and 2026 tokenized-gold plans.

Tait made the call in a Consensus Miami interview with David Lin, posted on Youtube later that month, and has recently gone viral on social media. It is circulating widely again because every bout of market stress revives the same question: Does bitcoin protect capital, or does it join the stampede for the exits?

Tait told Lin at the event:

“I know my personal opinion on bitcoin is that it’s going to go to zero… That’s my personal opinion … It’s just my personal opinion … Just instinct as a trader.”

He was very careful to label it a personal view, not a World Gold Council (WGC) forecast dressed up as research. No model, no target date, no spreadsheet, just the instinct of a trader who has watched risk assets break together.

Tait Says Bitcoin Trades Like Leveraged Risk

Tait’s case comes down to the tape. When stocks wobble and liquidity dries up, bitcoin has repeatedly traded with the risk basket instead of acting like insurance. That is the inconvenient part for anyone who bought the safe-haven pitch.

The real test for a haven arrives when investors are forced to sell something. Gold has often caught bids as recession fears, debt alarms, and geopolitical shocks hit the screens, even though it can be volatile, and no trade is guaranteed to work.

Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, widely known by his initials CZ, responded to the video of World Gold Council CEO David Tait saying BTC will go to zero. Image source: X.

Bitcoin believers cite its 21 million-coin cap, easy transfer and portability, alongside its separation from governments. Those features are real. Tait’s objection is simpler: the market still treats bitcoin like a risk-on trade when pressure suddenly arrives, like the U.S.-Iran war, for example.

Gold and Bitcoin Can Still Offset Each Other

Even after calling bitcoin’s long-term survival into question, Tait did not tell holders to dump it for bullion. His practical point was that gold owners can hold BTC, and bitcoin owners can hold gold, because the two markets fail differently.

That split matters at the portfolio level. Central banks hold gold as a reserve asset because it has survived currency crises and policy mistakes. Bitcoin is newer, swings harder, and can move sharply on liquidity, rates, and the latest risk-on rush.

The correlation is not a permanent law. Gold and bitcoin have moved apart, then together, as each market reacts to changing liquidity and fear. Holding both offers no magic shield, but it avoids betting everything on one macro script.

Stablecoins Expose Bitcoin’s Utility Problem

Tait separated bitcoin from stablecoins, which are digital tokens built to hold a steady value, often through dollar or asset backing. He sees clear uses for stablecoins in payments, settlement, and collateral, where price stability is the product.

Fiat money works because users expect governments, central banks, and major institutions to stand behind it, flaws included. Tait argues bitcoin has not built that same trust or shown enough durable uses to justify its monetary valuation.

Bitcoin supporters see the ledger differently. Exchange-traded funds (ETFs), corporate treasury purchases from firms like Strategy, and a global transfer network have widened access without a bank in the middle. Tait acknowledged Blackrock’s IBIT hit roughly $70 billion in assets in 341 days, faster than early gold ETFs grew by a long shot.

Debt Fears Keep Gold’s Bid Alive

Tait tied gold’s multiyear surge to the debt problem building inside sovereign balance sheets, not just war headlines, tariffs, or Federal Reserve rate chatter. Asian central banks have kept buying as they seek reserves less exposed to another nation’s currency.

Gold traded above $4,400 in mid-August after pushing beyond $5,000 earlier in 2026, according to market statistics. Spot values today on Aug. 16 stand at $4,375 per ounce. Bitcoin has sat in the low-to-mid $60,000s after earlier highs, a visible reminder that the two trades have told very different stories.

The WGC outfit is not standing outside crypto. It is in the midst of building Gold-as-a-Service for tokenized and crypto-native physical-gold products, with a proof of concept targeted for late 2026. The old-money camp wants a seat at the digital table.

Tait’s zero call will not end the argument. The next real test is whether bitcoin sells with risk assets in the next major liquidity shock, whether central banks keep absorbing gold, and whether rules and adoption turn digital dollars and tokenized gold into lasting markets. Bitcoin diehards shredded the WGC chief’s evidence-free zero call on X.

“The CEO of the gold lobby says bitcoin is going to zero. Water is wet,” the X account 2xnmore explained to its 45,000 social media followers. “He literally called it a gut feeling. His words: ‘just my personal opinion, just instinct as a trader.’ No model. No data. When asked what would change his mind, he said he does not know if anything would.”

The individual added:

“That is not a forecast. That is a mood. Now ask the obvious question. Who signs his paycheck?”

Gold’s advantage is no mystery: central banks already own it, dealers already finance it, and buyers know the exit is there. Bitcoin’s answer will be measured in ETF redemptions, corporate balance-sheet decisions, and whether its market keeps taking its cues from the same liquidity pulse driving tech stocks.
