TL;DR: October 8 marks the cutoff for production-style staging traffic on The Graph’s centralized Subgraph Studio endpoints for Polygon and BNB Chain. Developers are being pushed onto The Graph Network, where independent indexers serve queries and earn the associated fees.

The Graph is shutting another door on the centralized infrastructure that helped bootstrap its ecosystem.

October 8 is the transition deadline for Subgraph Studio staging traffic on Polygon and BNB Chain, moving those queries toward The Graph‘s decentralized network of indexers.

For users of decentralized applications, almost nothing visible should change.

For the infrastructure underneath those apps, the difference is important.

Subgraphs organize blockchain data so applications can ask useful questions without scanning an entire chain every time they need information.

A DeFi front end might use a subgraph to retrieve positions, transaction histories or protocol statistics.

Historically, developers could rely on hosted or Studio infrastructure provided centrally while they built and tested those applications.

That was convenient, but it created an awkward contradiction.

Apps marketed as decentralized could still depend on a centralized indexing endpoint to retrieve the data required to function.

The Graph has been working to move that traffic onto its decentralized network.

Polygon and BNB Chain are the first major environments in the current migration stage.

Developers whose subgraphs are already published to The Graph Network do not need to make major changes.

Projects still pointing production traffic toward Studio staging endpoints need to publish their subgraphs, configure billing and switch to network gateway endpoints.

Once traffic moves, independent indexers serve those queries and earn fees in GRT.

That gives the migration an economic dimension as well as a technical one.

Usage that previously sat inside centralized infrastructure becomes activity that contributes directly to the decentralized network’s fee market.

The Graph Foundation has been trying to make that distinction increasingly clear.

Studio remains useful as a development and staging environment, but it is not intended to be the permanent production backend for decentralized applications.

The October 8 deadline forces the issue for two of crypto’s larger application ecosystems.

BNB Chain and Polygon both host large numbers of smart contracts and user-facing dApps, so moving their query traffic can provide a meaningful test of whether decentralized indexing can absorb production workloads cleanly.

Developers may not love mandatory migrations.

Endpoints have to be updated, billing needs to be configured and any infrastructure transition introduces the possibility of something breaking.

But the alternative is leaving a central dependency embedded inside applications that otherwise claim to be decentralized.

The Graph has spent years arguing that blockchain data access should itself be a network.

For Polygon and BNB Chain developers, that argument just became less optional.
