Samurai Shodown R, a mobile MMORPG by SNK and Lumiwave, launches on Sui, featuring real-time multiplayer and onchain progression, leveraging blockchain for seamless gameplay.
Samurai Shodown R, the latest mobile MMORPG developed by SNK in collaboration with Lumiwave, has been officially launched on the Sui blockchain. The game introduces a unique blend of fast-paced combat, evolving NFTs, and cooperative multiplayer features, all supported by a robust blockchain infrastructure, according to Sui Foundation.
Blockchain-Powered Gameplay
The game leverages four core Sui technologies to enhance gameplay, progression, and economy. zkLogin allows players to sign in using familiar Web2 credentials, bypassing the need for a crypto wallet or seed phrase. Dynamic NFTs evolve in real-time, reflecting player activity and achieving new levels and attributes as they progress. Shared Objects enable players to interact with the same in-game assets simultaneously, facilitating seamless multiplayer experiences such as clan quests and PvP battles. Additionally, Closed-Loop Tokens ensure that in-game tokens remain within the game’s ecosystem, promoting collaboration and long-term progression among players.
Reviving a Classic
Originally debuting in arcades in 1993, Samurai Shodown is renowned for its weapon-based combat and distinct visual style. Over the years, it has been a staple in competitive gaming and has seen various adaptations. Samurai Shodown R builds on this legacy by introducing multiplayer quests, cooperative clan systems, and upgradeable NFTs that reflect players’ in-game achievements.

Adeniyi Abiodun, Chief Product Officer and Co-Founder of Mysten Labs, praised the integration of top-tier game design with scalable blockchain infrastructure, describing Samurai Shodown R as a pioneering example of Web3’s potential in gaming. Kangyong Yi, Co-Founder of LumiWave, highlighted the game’s ability to honor the franchise’s legacy while integrating blockchain mechanics that reward player progression and collaboration.
Future Developments
Samurai Shodown R will also be playable on the SuiPlay0X1, a handheld gaming device developed in partnership with Playtron, which supports both Web2 and Web3 games. The device sold out its first preorder run and is expected to ship soon, with Samurai Shodown R’s availability on the platform to be announced later.
