NYSE Builds Onchain Settlement Rails for Tokenized Securities

Key Takeaways

NYSE President Lynn Martin confirmed onchain settlement plans building on DTCC’s July pilot.NYSE participated in DTCC’s tokenization pilot in July, ahead of an October full launch. The move builds on NYSE’s January plan for 24/7 tokenized trading of U.S. equities and ETFs.

NYSE’s Latest Onchain Push

NYSE President Lynn Martin said the exchange is developing an onchain settlement platform for tokenized securities and confirmed NYSE participated in the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation’s (DTCC) tokenization pilot in July. Martin said NYSE will continue exploring how the technology can serve as core infrastructure for global financial markets, describing it as a way to bridge traditional finance with decentralized finance (DeFi).

In January, the exchange outlined a platform for 24/7 onchain trading and settlement of U.S. equities and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), designed to support fractional shares, instant settlement and stablecoin-based funding. That plan includes BNY and Citi backing tokenized deposits across clearinghouses run by Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), NYSE’s parent company.

Separately, NYSE has been building out its tokenization capabilities through a partnership with Securitize, which now serves as the exchange’s first digital transfer agent, converting traditional stocks and ETFs into blockchain-based tokens capable of trading around the clock while preserving full shareholder rights.

DTCC’s Pilot Sets the Pace

NYSE’s settlement platform will arrive alongside DTCC’s own tokenization rollout, the largest production tokenization initiative the clearinghouse has attempted to date. DTCC set an October full launch for a platform covering Russell 1000 stocks, major exchange-traded funds and key U.S. Treasury instruments.

Tokenmetrics

The pilot has already moved past the planning stage with DTCC reportedly moving tokenized stocks, ETFs and Treasurys into live trading soon, a milestone the clearinghouse described as a major step for Wall Street’s blockchain infrastructure. More than 50 firms have shaped the effort with their input, including Blackrock, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and crypto-native firms like Anchorage and Circle.

Part of a Broader Tokenization Land Grab

NYSE isn’t the only major player racing to build tokenized-securities infrastructure this year. Bitcoin.com News reported that ICE, NYSE’s parent, invested in crypto exchange OKX at a $25 billion valuation, with plans to let OKX users trade tokenized stocks and derivatives tied to NYSE-listed assets later in 2026.

Bullish, the crypto exchange that itself trades under the ticker BLSH, also announced a $4.2 billion deal to acquire transfer agent Equiniti in May, aiming to link its digital-asset business with traditional shareholder record-keeping. And Securitize too began trading on the NYSE under the ticker SECZ in July, after a $400 million SPAC deal closed (giving the tokenization specialist a public listing on the very exchange it’s helping bring onchain).

Regulators have also been moving in step with the industry, with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approving NYSE’s rules for tokenized equities in April, and reports have since indicated the agency is preparing a broader exemption framework specifically for tokenized U.S. stocks, which would give issuers and exchanges clearer legal footing to expand beyond pilot programs.

If the NYSE and DTCC succeed in moving mainstream securities settlement onchain, it would mark one of the clearest signs yet that blockchain infrastructure is migrating from crypto-native platforms into the plumbing of traditional finance.
