JPMorgan Predicts Bitcoin Will Outperform US Stocks, Gold and Real Estate Over the Next Decade

JPMorgan Asset Management expects Bitcoin to deliver stronger long-term returns than US large-cap stocks, gold and real estate investment trusts, adding to the cryptocurrency’s growing recognition among traditional financial institutions despite persistent concerns about its volatility.

The firm’s 2027 Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions project Bitcoin (BTC) to generate a 10% annualized compound return over the next 10 to 15 years. That compares with 8.2% for US real estate investment trusts (REITs), 7.5% for US large-cap equities and 5.5% for gold.

The forecast offers cryptocurrency investors a notable endorsement from a firm associated with one of Bitcoin’s most outspoken institutional critics. However, JPMorgan’s projections also highlight the risks that continue to distinguish Bitcoin from more established investments.

Bitcoin Leads JPMorgan’s Long-Term Return Forecasts

Bitcoin ranks first among the four asset classes in JPMorgan Asset Management’s expected compound returns, suggesting the firm sees greater long-term growth potential in the cryptocurrency than in traditional alternatives.

The projections are based on a multiyear investment horizon rather than expectations for Bitcoin’s next market move. They reflect assumptions about future returns, not guaranteed outcomes.

For investors comparing assets over a decade or longer, the difference is significant. Bitcoin’s projected annual return exceeds that of US large-cap stocks by 2.5 percentage points and gold by 4.5 percentage points. Its expected return also stands 1.8 percentage points above that of US REITs.

Compounding can magnify these differences over time. Yet the projections do not mean Bitcoin will outperform every year, or that investors can expect a smooth path toward higher valuations.

JPMorgan estimates Bitcoin’s arithmetic average annual return at 20.9%, considerably above its 10% compound return. The gap reflects the effect of price fluctuations on long-term wealth: substantial gains in some periods can be offset by steep losses in others.

High Volatility Remains Bitcoin’s Biggest Obstacle

The strongest qualification in JPMorgan’s outlook is Bitcoin’s projected annualized volatility of 55%.

That figure is substantially higher than the volatility typically associated with major equity and gold markets. It signals that Bitcoin investors could experience sharp price swings and substantial drawdowns, even if the cryptocurrency ultimately achieves its projected long-term return.

JPMorgan has also cautioned against treating Bitcoin as an ordinary portfolio holding. The asset manager has not incorporated Bitcoin into its main covariance matrices, which help investors evaluate how different assets move in relation to one another.

“The volatility and unstable correlation of assets like bitcoin (BTC) remain an obstacle to their widespread inclusion in portfolios,” the firm said.

The distinction matters for institutional investors managing diversified portfolios. An asset can offer attractive expected returns while still presenting challenges in risk management, portfolio construction and liquidity planning.

For individual investors, the forecast is similarly a reminder that higher potential returns come with greater uncertainty. Bitcoin’s long-term performance will depend on market demand, regulation, institutional participation and broader financial conditions.

Bitwise CIO Welcomes the Forecast

Matt Hougan, chief investment officer at Bitwise, welcomed the projections as another sign of Bitcoin’s growing acceptance within traditional finance.

In a post on X, Hougan pointed to the contrast between Bitcoin’s early dismissal by established financial institutions and its inclusion in a major asset manager’s long-term return assumptions.

He acknowledged that JPMorgan’s forecast came with caveats, including concerns about Bitcoin’s volatility and maturity, but described its inclusion as a notable development.

The reaction reflects a broader shift in how financial firms approach cryptocurrency. Bitcoin remains controversial, but institutional investors increasingly evaluate it through formal investment frameworks rather than dismissing it outright.

That shift does not amount to universal acceptance. Instead, it suggests that some financial institutions are becoming more willing to assess Bitcoin alongside conventional assets, while continuing to account for its distinct risks.

JPMorgan’s Forecast Contrasts With Jamie Dimon’s Criticism

The outlook also highlights the complicated relationship between JPMorgan and Bitcoin.

Chief executive Jamie Dimon has repeatedly criticized the cryptocurrency, calling it a “fraud” in 2017 and later comparing it to a Ponzi scheme and a pet rock.

His position has softened in one important respect: in May 2025, Dimon said JPMorgan would allow clients to buy Bitcoin, even as he maintained his personal reservations about the asset.

The distinction between Dimon’s views and the asset management division’s forecasts is important. A long-term capital market assumption is an investment projection, not a declaration of support for Bitcoin or a recommendation that every client should own it.

Still, Bitcoin’s appearance at the top of the return table illustrates how institutional analysis can differ from an executive’s public criticism.

Fund Holdings Offer Context, Not Proof of New Demand

Separate data from Santiment indicates that investment funds have maintained holdings of more than 1 million BTC for several months.

The figures suggest that a substantial amount of Bitcoin remains held through investment products. However, stable holdings do not establish that fresh money is entering the market or that institutional buying pressure is increasing.

To assess new demand, investors would need to examine changes in fund balances, net inflows and outflows, and other measures of buying activity.

The distinction is particularly relevant when evaluating Bitcoin’s price outlook. Persistent fund holdings can provide useful context, but they do not independently establish the direction of future prices.

What Could Bitcoin’s Forecast Mean for Investors?

JPMorgan’s projections illustrate how a relatively modest difference in annualized returns can translate into a substantial gap over time.

For example, an investment growing at a hypothetical 10% compound annual rate would increase approximately 2.59 times over 10 years, before fees, taxes and other costs. A $10,000 investment would become about $25,937 under that assumption.

This is an illustration of compounding, not a Bitcoin price target or a prediction that the cryptocurrency will follow that trajectory.

Bitcoin could fall short of the forecast if institutional demand weakens, regulation becomes more restrictive, market confidence deteriorates or competing investments become more attractive. Higher interest rates could also strengthen the appeal of assets that generate income.

Conversely, broader adoption and sustained investment demand could support the cryptocurrency’s long-term prospects, although neither outcome is assured.

JPMorgan’s central message is not that Bitcoin has become a low-risk investment, but that its potential long-term returns may justify closer consideration. With projected compound returns of 10% and annualized volatility of 55%, Bitcoin presents investors with a clear trade-off between growth potential and risk.

Whether that trade-off proves worthwhile will depend on how the market evolves over the coming decade.
