He Paid 75 Cents for a Record at a Street Sale. It Was a One-of-a-Kind Velvet Underground Acetate

Key Takeaways

A 75-cent sidewalk impulse buy turned into a one-of-a-kind piece of music history.Provenance and scarcity, not the music itself, drive what collectors will pay.Public bidding exposed a huge gap between a bid and a closed deal.

Warren Hill was killing time at a Chelsea sidewalk sale in September 2002 when he spotted a battered disc priced at 75 cents. Hill, a record collector and then a Kenny Rogers Roasters employee from Montreal, didn’t know he was pocketing a 1966 Velvet Underground acetate cut at Scepter Studios, years before the band’s debut took shape around Lou Reed’s songs. The story gets wilder: after a 2006 eBay listing drew a $155,401 winning bid that fell through, the one-of-a-kind test pressing ultimately sold on eBay in December 2006 for $25,200.

From sidewalk bargain to internet asset

One of my favorite tech-business stories is the kind that starts offline and ends as a line item on a global marketplace. In September 2002, record collector Warren Hill, then a Kenny Rogers Roasters employee visiting from Montreal, spotted a dusty disc at a street sale in Chelsea, New York. He paid 75 cents and walked away with something the internet would later price very differently.

The item was a one-of-a-kind Velvet Underground acetate, the kind of fragile, pre-commercial pressing that normally never leaves industry hands. It is also a reminder that “inventory” can be hiding in plain sight, long before it becomes a searchable, shippable product on a platform with worldwide bidders.

The provenance trail that makes a listing

The acetate was recorded in April 1966 at Scepter Studios in New York, capturing early versions of songs that would appear on “The Velvet Underground & Nico” the following year. It was cut under the direction of Norman Dolph, a Columbia Records sales executive who helped produce the demo.

In the kind of back-channel deal collectors obsess over, Dolph reportedly received an original painting from Andy Warhol, who was managing the band at the time, in exchange for cutting the acetate in secret before a label signing. Only about 2 such pressings are believed to exist, which is exactly the scarcity profile that turns an object into an investable asset.

eBay discovers price, then discovers risk

After the find, Hill showed the acetate to his friend Eric Isaacson of Mississippi Records in Portland, Oregon, before putting it up for sale. When Hill listed it on eBay in 2006, the auction initially drew a winning bid of $155,401, but the transaction fell through, a blunt lesson in the difference between a bid and a closed deal.

The market reset later that year. In December 2006, the acetate ultimately resold on eBay for $25,200. How many product categories have you seen where “price discovery” happens in public, with receipts, and the variance is that wide?

Liquidity, replication, and the long tail

By 2012, the acetate’s contents had been made publicly available via a reissue produced from an identical test pressing. That detail matters: digitization can separate the listening experience from the underlying asset, leaving the physical object to trade primarily on provenance and rarity.

The acetate surfaced again in July 2014, when it was put up for auction via eBay by Chicago record store Shuga Records, on behalf of an anonymous seller. Even years later, the arc still tracks: a sidewalk purchase becomes a verified artifact, and a niche collectible becomes a liquid listing.
