Blockchain.com Opens Crypto Options Trading With Just $5
Digital currency firm Blockchain.com has introduced a new way to trade cryptocurrency price movements, and the entry price is less than a typical lunch. Starting Oct. 20, eligible customers can purchase options on seven digital assets for premiums as low as $5, plus fees, without borrowing money or risking a margin call.
Crypto derivatives like options are basically financial contracts that give traders the right, without requiring them, to buy or sell a cryptocurrency at a fixed price, known as the strike price, before or on a specified expiration date. Investors use these contracts to protect their crypto holdings against falling prices, or to profit from market movements while limiting how much money they can lose.
But the convenience comes with an important restriction: Once purchased, these contracts cannot be sold, adjusted, or closed before expiration, leaving traders committed to their original bets regardless of what happens next.
7 Cryptocurrencies, One-Week Expirations
The new service supports bitcoin (BTC), ether (ETH), solana (SOL), hyperliquid (HYPE), avalanche (AVAX), XRP, and tron (TRX), allowing customers to speculate on price direction without purchasing the underlying cryptocurrency. Inside Blockchain.com’s trading account, users select a target price, expiration date, and spending amount. The platform automatically structures the corresponding call or put option, with contracts expiring within seven days.
Calls appear as “Above,” while puts are labeled “Below.” Traders receive payouts when settlement prices move favorably beyond their selected strike prices, with larger favorable movements producing larger returns. Purchases are funded upfront using the stablecoin USDC, limiting maximum losses to the premium and applicable fees.
The $5 Entry Comes With a Catch
Unlike conventional options platforms, Blockchain.com’s new offering doesn’t permit early exits. Even profitable positions must remain open until settlement, exposing traders to potential reversals before expiration. A purchase fee applies upfront, while an additional settlement fee is charged only when gross payouts exceed the premium.
Taro Ugen, Blockchain.com’s vice president of consumer, explained the company’s approach, stating:
“We take care of the complexity in the background, so users get a simpler way to access a powerful trading service with clearly defined risk that augments their investment toolkit.”
U.S. Traders Face Restrictions
The service excludes several major markets, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. However, Blockchain.com filed applications with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) on Oct. 13 seeking authorization to operate regulated derivatives and prediction markets in the United States.
The company previously introduced perpetual futures through Hyperliquid in April. For now, Blockchain.com’s latest offering presents a curious proposition: A $5 entry into sophisticated derivatives trading, paired with absolutely no escape hatch before expiration.
