Bitcoin struggles to maintain key levels as long-term holders continue to sell. Market dynamics hinge on Federal Reserve’s upcoming decisions, potentially influencing volatility.

Bitcoin’s (BTC) recent market activity reflects a challenging phase as it struggles to hold key cost-basis levels, according to Glassnode. The cryptocurrency faces persistent selling pressure from long-term holders, impacting its ability to sustain upward momentum.

Market Struggles with Key Levels

Bitcoin’s price has failed to maintain above the short-term holders’ cost basis of approximately $113,000, a crucial threshold that often indicates the balance between bullish and bearish momentum. The inability to reclaim this level raises the risk of a deeper retracement towards the Active Investors’ Realized Price, which is around $88,000.

This struggle is compounded by the ongoing distribution by long-term holders, who are offloading approximately 104,000 BTC per month. This distribution pattern is reminiscent of previous market cycles where long-term holders’ selling marked phases of demand exhaustion.

Volatility and Options Market Dynamics

Despite the cooling of implied volatility after October’s market crash, the options market remains in a delicate position. The Federal Reserve’s upcoming decisions play a significant role in this landscape. A hawkish surprise could reignite volatility, while a dovish outcome might sustain the current stability.

Implied volatility has eased, with skew resetting lower, indicating a shift from extreme demand for downside protection to a more balanced outlook. Traders are cautiously optimistic, as reflected in the selective upside positioning at certain strike prices, suggesting a moderate rally rather than an aggressive breakout.

Long-Term Holders and Market Sentiment

The continued distribution by long-term holders underscores a phase of demand exhaustion. The net position change for these holders has reached significant levels, highlighting a wave of profit-taking amid weakening demand. Historically, market expansions have only occurred after these holders shift from distribution to accumulation.

The transfer volume from long-term holders to exchanges has surged, indicating sustained sell-side pressure. This elevated activity mirrors past periods of heightened long-term holder spending, which typically suppresses price momentum.

Outlook and Federal Reserve’s Influence

As the market navigates this period of recalibration, attention turns to the Federal Reserve’s actions. The outcome of their meeting could significantly impact market volatility. A dovish stance might preserve the current stability, but any deviation could lead to increased volatility as traders adjust their positions.

Overall, the market’s current calm remains conditional, with the potential for renewed volatility dependent on external economic factors and the behavior of long-term holders. Until they transition back to accumulation, Bitcoin’s upside potential may remain constrained.
