AI agents are shaping e-commerce, handling payments, procurement, and trust. Learn how enterprises can adapt to this shift.

A new frontier in e-commerce is emerging, driven by autonomous AI agents capable of negotiating, purchasing, and managing transactions independently. Known as agentic commerce, this shift could redefine how payments, procurement, and enterprise strategy operate, according to a blog by the Algorand (ALGO) Foundation’s CMSO, Marc Vanlerberghe. The implications are already being felt, with major players like Visa piloting live agentic commerce transactions earlier this year.

Unlike traditional e-commerce, where humans make all the final decisions, agentic commerce positions AI agents as autonomous economic participants. These agents can book services, subscribe to software, and execute transactions within predefined parameters. The market is moving quickly, with foundational technologies like machine-to-machine payment protocols, such as the x402 standard, already in active development.

Why Enterprises Can’t Ignore This

Agentic commerce is no longer theoretical. On July 2, 2026, Visa and several European banks successfully conducted live AI-driven transactions at participating merchant websites. In a separate move, Nuvei demonstrated an in-agent payment proof of concept with Visa and Arvato Systems, highlighting real-world applications across industries.

For enterprises, the urgency lies in understanding the infrastructure changes required to support autonomous agents. Questions around trust, authorization, and liability must be addressed now, not later. Organizations that delay risk being forced to adapt to standards established by early movers.

Key Questions for Leaders

Vanlerberghe points to several pressing questions for businesses:

How should payment and procurement systems adapt to non-human counterparties?
What frameworks ensure secure, verifiable transactions by autonomous agents?
Which industries will see the earliest adoption and competitive advantage?

Payments, digital commerce, and AI infrastructure sectors are particularly poised to see agentic commerce adoption first. Companies in these spaces must explore how to integrate emerging protocols like x402, along with identity and authorization frameworks, to enable seamless and secure transactions.

AI in Payments: A Billion-Dollar Disruption

Visa’s collaboration with OpenAI to enable secure AI-driven payments underscores agentic commerce’s potential to disrupt the trillion-dollar e-commerce industry. By leveraging stablecoins, tokenization, and blockchain-based solutions, these systems could handle everything from API payments to large-scale procurement autonomously. However, unresolved issues—such as fraud prevention, liability, and user consent—remain critical barriers to widespread adoption.

What’s Next?

To help enterprises navigate this shift, the Algorand Foundation is hosting a webinar on August 18, 2026. The session will cover the basics of agentic commerce, its potential impact, and what businesses can do now to prepare. Key topics include emerging protocols like Google’s AP2 and Anthropic’s MCP, as well as the industries most likely to see early adoption.

Agentic commerce represents a fundamental change in how transactions occur, elevating AI from advisor to actor. Enterprises that grasp this shift early have the opportunity to shape its development, while laggards risk falling behind as the standards solidify.
