Bridging the Gap to Production
Enterprise blockchain platform Settlemint and digital asset infrastructure provider Utila announced a partnership aimed at helping financial institutions move tokenization projects from experimental pilot phases into live, production-ready operating environments.
Under a recently signed collaboration agreement, the two firms will combine Settlemint’s Digital Asset Lifecycle Platform (DALP) with Utila’s secure custody and governance controls. The collaboration targets a growing operational gap in institutional digital assets, where issuing a token is only the first step in a complex, multi-stage asset lifecycle.
As global banks, financial technology firms, and market infrastructure providers prepare to deploy regulated digital assets at scale, operational security and automation have become crucial differentiators.
Regulated financial instruments require comprehensive infrastructure beyond simple token creation. To operate safely, these assets require self-custodial multi-party computation (MPC) wallet infrastructure to eliminate single points of failure. They also need multi-chain connectivity, strict regulatory enforcement mechanisms, and continuous support across issuance, servicing, corporate actions, and eventual maturity or redemption.
Addressing the core challenge banks face after initial asset creation, Settlemint CEO Adam Popat emphasized that issuance represents only a fraction of the operational hurdle.
“Issuance is usually the simplest part of a tokenised asset programme,” Popat told Bitcoin.com News. “The operational complexity starts once the asset is live and the bank has to manage distributions, redemptions, clawbacks, approvals and the audit trail around each of those events.”
Popat noted that combining Utila’s self-custodial MPC wallets and policy controls with Settlemint’s DALP creates a unified framework where transactions are automatically verified against an institution’s specific access rules before signing.
Under this setup, corporate actions such as scheduled yield distributions and simultaneous payment-and-asset redemption settlements can be executed under a single governance environment.
“In our experience, this is where banks begin to see the difference between proving that an asset can be tokenised and operating a digital asset programme as part of normal business,” Popat added. “The technology has to support the controls, approvals and servicing requirements that continue long after issuance.”
Securing Autonomous AI Financial Workflows
A key focus of the partnership is mitigating operational risks as institutions begin deploying autonomous software agents for dynamic liquidity balancing, automated treasury operations, and cross-border payments.
Addressing concerns over unmonitored private key access, Utila co-founder and CEO Bentzi Rabi explained how MPC architecture enforces strict boundaries on artificial intelligence (AI) systems. For instance, every transaction requested by an agent must pass automated policy filters before signing can occur.
For actions exceeding automated thresholds, transactions pause until human approvers or specialized co-signers fulfill configured approval quorums across designated departments.
Meanwhile, Settlemint and Utila plan to pursue joint commercial initiatives across global markets, with an initial focus on the Asia-Pacific region. These planned joint efforts include institutional client deployments and product demonstrations, regulatory sandbox pilots with financial authorities and market education programs on institutional asset tokenization.
