A Federal US Crypto Bank Just Added Physical Uranium Tokens

Key Takeaways

Anchorage Digital Bank became the first federally chartered bank to custody tokenized uranium on Sept. 16, 2026.The xU3O8 token links directly to physical yellowcake held in Cameco storage under Archax trust supervision.Despite federal custody approval, the xU3O8 market remains tiny, with a total valuation hovering near $9 million.

With a modest market capitalization hovering just above $9 million, the move allows regulated funds to hold a tightly restricted radioactive commodity inside the same segregated, bankruptcy-remote bank accounts they use for bitcoin (BTC) and cash equivalents.

A federally chartered American bank will now happily hold your radioactive yellowcake claims alongside your stablecoins. On September 16, 2026, Anchorage Digital Bank N.A. introduced institutional custody for xU3O8, an onchain token backed by physical uranium ore concentrate.

The underlying metal sits packed inside industrial storage drums at Cameco facilities, while beneficial ownership lives on Etherlink, a layer-2 network built on Tezos. The setup bypasses the cumbersome bureaucracy that once locked ordinary funds out of nuclear energy trades entirely. Regulated custody has arrived for atomic power.

Yellowcake in a Digital Wrapper

Physical uranium has never traded like copper or corn. Traditional procurement requires bespoke broker networks, specialized regulatory clearances, and massive order minimums. Settlement routinely stretches across weeks. The xU3O8 token, issued via Uranium.io with U.K.-regulated firm Archax acting as trustee, turns that legal claim into an asset that transfers within minutes.

The physical powder is not reactor-ready fuel, nor can anyone weaponize it on a whim without extensive enrichment. Instead, Cameco holds the actual metal in certified facilities while publishing regular proof-of-reserves audits. The token merely wraps beneficial ownership under English trust law. Anchorage clients simply tuck the digital claim into segregated, bankruptcy-remote accounts.

Why the Charter Matters

Additionally, institutional buyers rarely doubted whether physical commodities could be minted onchain. The headache was finding someone legal to hold the keys. Regulators at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) supervise Anchorage, meaning compliance teams skip separate counterparty reviews for exotic assets.

“Institutions are not short on interest in tokenized real-world assets. They are short on places to hold them that satisfy a risk framework,” explained Anchorage Digital CEO Nathan McCauley during the announcement. For an institutional chief risk officer, the difference between an offshore wallet and an OCC-supervised custodian is night and day.

Tiny Float Meets Nuclear Demand

The market itself remains minuscule. With xU3O8 trading near $5.66 per unit, the token’s total market value sits barely near any major token market caps. That amount would hardly cover a rounding error on a global utility’s annual procurement ledger.

Yet power-hungry artificial intelligence (AI) data centers are driving massive interest in nuclear baseload generation. Allocators caught flat-footed by the energy squeeze want exposure without renting licensed hazmat warehouses. Ben Elvidge, head of alternative assets at Trilitech, noted that Anchorage essentially “removes the single biggest obstacle we hear from allocators.”

Whether institutional desk heads actually buy enough digital yellowcake to move the needle, only time will tell. The real question is how bank examiners handle a portfolio where nuclear energy fuel, dollar tokens, and crypto assets like bitcoin share a similar distributed ledger technology.
