VOIDZ pushes boundaries of storytelling with Runway AI, blending mixed reality and documentary filmmaking in his new project, ‘Ends Meat.’

VOIDZ, an anonymous mixed-reality artist active since 2018, has unveiled Ends Meat, a 95-second short film that blends documentary realism with surreal visual effects. The project, which features 15 surreal interventions, was made possible using Runway AI’s generative VFX tools like Seedance 2.0. VOIDZ, known for his commercial work with brands like Burberry and L’Oréal, is now carving out a niche he calls ‘Documentary Surrealism.’

The inspiration for Ends Meat stems from everyday economic anxieties, particularly the rising cost of living. VOIDZ documented a real, unscripted grocery run, then used AI to manipulate the footage, making groceries and objects swell and strain under ‘economic pressure.’ The result is a visual metaphor for inflation, presented through a seamless blend of real and fabricated imagery.

Runway’s Role in Streamlining Production

Traditional VFX work limited VOIDZ to creating 10-15 second clips due to the labor-intensive 3D modeling and rendering process. With Runway’s AI tools, however, he could extend his creative possibilities significantly. VOIDZ noted that producing Ends Meat using conventional VFX would have taken six months to a year. Instead, generative tools allowed him to iterate quickly, preserving the real footage while seamlessly integrating surreal elements.

“Runway feels much more like a creative toolkit that can actually fit into an existing production pipeline,” VOIDZ explains. The Seedance 2.0 feature enabled the AI to match camera movements, lighting, and textures from the raw footage, generating surreal visuals that extended or altered the original shots without losing authenticity.

Documentary Surrealism: A New Visual Language

VOIDZ describes his approach as a fusion of raw documentary filmmaking and sophisticated digital manipulation. By starting with real, unscripted material, he uses AI tools to highlight emotional and structural truths that traditional lenses might miss. “As synthetic imagery becomes ubiquitous, I think things that genuinely happened become more interesting, not less,” he says.

With Ends Meat, VOIDZ aims to move beyond spectacle, focusing instead on storytelling and emotional resonance. Early viewer feedback suggests the film’s surreal visuals effectively amplify its commentary on economic struggles, rather than distracting from the narrative.

Looking Ahead

VOIDZ sees Ends Meat as the first step in a larger exploration of ‘Documentary Surrealism.’ He hopes to expand the format through festival screenings and future projects, aiming to develop a new visual language that bridges the raw authenticity of documentaries with the imaginative power of digital effects.

As generative AI tools like Runway continue to evolve, artists like VOIDZ are pushing the boundaries of what solo creators can achieve. While the technology democratizes access to high-level VFX, VOIDZ emphasizes that its true value lies in answering the question, “Why does this image need to exist?”
