Solana (SOL)’s report reveals how stablecoins are disrupting remittances by reducing fees, speeding up transfers, and reaching the unbanked.

Stablecoins are transforming the $700 billion remittance market, according to a new report from the Solana (SOL) Foundation. By leveraging low-cost blockchain infrastructure, stablecoins like USDC and USDT offer near-instant settlement and significantly reduced fees, addressing long-standing inefficiencies in traditional remittance systems.

The report, titled An Evolution of Money Movement: How Stablecoins on Solana Are Reshaping Remittances, outlines four implementation strategies for money transfer operators and fintech providers. It highlights the potential to reduce the average remittance fee—currently 6.49% on a $200 transfer—and shorten settlement times from days to minutes. The report also explores use cases for reaching the 1.3 billion unbanked adults globally, nearly half of whom own smartphones.

Breaking Traditional Barriers

The traditional remittance system relies on pre-funded accounts and correspondent banking networks, locking up billions in capital and introducing delays. In contrast, stablecoins settle transactions directly on a blockchain, eliminating intermediaries. For recipients, this can mean faster access to funds and lower costs, provided local cash-out options are available.

However, the full benefits depend on the efficiency of the on- and off-ramp infrastructure. Providers like Yellow Card, Flutterwave, and Bitso are addressing this gap by offering local conversion services in high-volume corridors such as the U.S.-to-Mexico market, Nigeria, and the Philippines.

Industry Adopters Leading the Way

Major players are already integrating stablecoins into their operations. Western Union has launched USDPT, a stablecoin issued through Anchorage Digital Bank, alongside its Stablecard product. Similarly, Zepz—parent company of WorldRemit and Sendwave—has introduced the Sendwave Wallet, enabling recipients in over 100 countries to store and spend received funds digitally. Tala, a fintech serving emerging markets, has deployed a $50 million tokenized lending facility in collaboration with Huma Finance.

The composable nature of blockchain technology allows these companies to build additional services—such as savings accounts, credit scoring, and investment tools—on top of basic money transfers. This shift turns remittances from isolated transactions into broader financial solutions.

Regulatory and Market Insights

The Solana report includes detailed analyses of key remittance corridors, such as the U.S. to Mexico, Brazil, Nigeria, the Philippines, and India. It examines local regulations, partner networks, and the market dynamics influencing adoption. Regulatory risks remain a hurdle, with compliance checks, sanctions exposure, and local cash-out options varying by jurisdiction.

Stablecoin adoption also introduces new risks, including potential peg failures, issuer reserve instability, and blockchain network errors. Despite these challenges, the total stablecoin market continues to grow, with a combined market cap of $290 billion as of September 2026.

What’s Next?

The first generation of stablecoin-powered remittance products is already live, but the market is still in its early stages. Solana’s report identifies four entry paths for companies looking to adopt stablecoins, ranging from low-risk treasury optimization to launching full-scale stablecoin platforms. Each path comes with varying barriers to entry, revenue models, and time-to-value considerations.

With remittance volumes projected to rise and stablecoins proving their utility, the sector is poised for further disruption. Companies seeking to compete in this evolving market must weigh the technological, regulatory, and operational implications of integrating blockchain-based solutions.

For a deeper dive into the findings, the full report is available on the Solana Foundation’s website.
