Bitcoin Price Rally Collapse Wipes Out $295M in Long Positions

Key Takeaways

Bitcoin dropped below $78,700 before recovering to $79,500 after strong U.S. employment data on Friday.Reduced Fed rate-cut odds triggered over $295 million in long liquidations across crypto markets.Raoul Pal expects currency debasement to drive Bitcoin above its 89% annual return trend over time.

Market Reversal Erases Gains

Bitcoin erased nearly all its recent gains Friday in a sharp sell-off, sparked by stronger-than-expected U.S. jobs data that experts warn diminishes the odds of a Federal Reserve rate cut sought by the Trump administration.

Overnight data showed bitcoin’s rally, which began Thursday morning, pushed the cryptocurrency above $82,000 for the first time in more than three months. After hitting an intraday peak of $82,281, it lost momentum and pulled back before finding support near $81,000.

The cryptocurrency maintained this range until 8:30 a.m. EST, when it suddenly plunged from just over $81,300 to $79,428 in less than 20 minutes. Moments after the sharp pullback, it fell below $78,700 around 10:50 a.m., only to reverse the losses less than an hour later. As of 12:14 p.m. EST, bitcoin hovered just below $79,500, translating to a loss of more than 2% in 24 hours. The reversal also sent its market capitalization tumbling to $1.57 trillion, just hours after it surpassed $1.62 trillion.

As expected, bitcoin’s sharp reversal caught long-position traders off guard. While short liquidations dominated before 8 a.m., the dynamic flipped less than four hours later. According to Coinglass, erased long positions made up nearly 55% of the roughly $193 million in leveraged positions liquidated by 12:23 p.m.

Because the sell-off extended to altcoins, long bets liquidated across the cryptocurrency market topped $295 million, compared with $213 million in short positions.

Strong Jobs Data Rattles Investors

A surprisingly hot jobs report sent shockwaves through risk markets. The U.S. economy shattered forecasts by adding 336,000 jobs—far outstripping the 170,000 to 180,000 projected by consensus—while keeping unemployment anchored at 3.8%. This stubborn strength in hiring signals that the Fed’s rate hikes have yet to chill the labor market.

Fearing that sustained employment strength will compel central bankers to keep borrowing costs elevated indefinitely, investors dumped both stocks and crypto.

Despite this latest pullback, bitcoiners like Raoul Pal believe the debasement narrative will continue to “drive everything” upward. He pointed to the Nasdaq, which he said has beaten the debasement rate by roughly 12% a year, while bitcoin has beaten it by 89% a year. Thus, Pal wrote on X:

“That’s why crypto is the super massive black hole of asset allocation. It becomes the most powerful asset we’ve ever had. The greatest performing asset of all time. This is the crux of my Everything Code framework… why debt forces central banks to debase, why markets endlessly go higher, and why only tech and crypto beat it.”
