A Texas Player Just Let $1 Million Expire. It Was Sitting at a Gas Station the Whole Time

Key Takeaways

Powerball’s $1 million Austin ticket expired after its Aug. 1 claim deadline.Circle K sold the ticket matching 5 white balls in the Feb. 2 Powerball drawing.Texas Lottery rules send the unclaimed $1 million to state-authorized programs.

Somewhere in North Austin, a Powerball ticket that was good for $1 million sat in a Circle K at 6107 W. Parmer Lane and never became anything more than a slip of paper. The numbers on it lined up with the five white balls, 3, 8, 31, 60 and 65, from the February 2, 2026 drawing, missing only the red Powerball 4. Under Texas Lottery rules, that 180-day clock ran out around August 1, and by now the money is slated to revert to the state for programs authorized by the Texas Legislature.

Every so often, a story about money feels less like finance and more like a lost password: the value is real, the proof exists, but the owner never logs in. That is the strange thread running through an Austin convenience store this summer, after the Texas Lottery Commission warned a big Powerball prize was still sitting out there, unclaimed.

A $1 million ticket that nearly had it all

The ticket was bought at Circle K store #2704686 at 6107 W. Parmer Lane in Austin, a detail repeated in local coverage as the deadline approached, including 6107 W. Parmer Lane. It corresponded to the February 2, 2026 Powerball drawing.

The slip matched all 5 white balls: 3, 8, 31, 60, and 65. It missed only the red Powerball number 4, which is why it was worth $1 million instead of the jackpot.

The deadline was clear, and then it was gone

Texas Lottery rules gave the holder a tight window: 180 days from the draw date to claim the prize. That put the in-person cutoff at 5 p.m. on July 31, 2026, with mail claims needing to be postmarked by August 1, 2026, per the 5 p.m. deadline detailed in late-July reporting.

As of July 27, the prize still hadn’t been claimed, turning the last few days into a public countdown. Today, August 21, sits nearly 3 weeks after the stated expiration date, meaning the claim window has now passed under those rules.

What happens to unclaimed winnings in Texas

When a prize goes unclaimed, the money doesn’t linger in a corporate account at the retailer, and it doesn’t stay earmarked for the player. The Texas Lottery has said unclaimed prizes revert to the state for programs authorized by the Texas Legislature, a policy reiterated in the run-up to this ticket’s expiration.

That’s a sober kind of redistribution: the same system that can mint a new millionaire on one night can also quietly reroute that cash when no one shows up.

The modern lesson, still strangely analog

Powerball tickets don’t come with identity, account recovery, or a push notification. This ticket was just paper and numbers, and apparently, that was not enough to connect $1 million to its owner before the clock ran out.

The one detail that remains unknown is the simplest: who bought it. But the hard facts are fixed, including the 180-day rule that ultimately decides the ending.
