Maya Parbhoe, a presidential candidate for the South American nation of Suriname, has an ambitious vision for her country. Taking inspiration from El Salvador’s Bitcoin strategy, she aims to build a Bitcoin nation even more deeply rooted in crypto than Nayib Bukele’s El Salvador.
In her latest X post, she shared her plans that 6 months from now, the people of Suriname will have a clear choice to end systemic corruption, embrace a full Bitcoin standard, and become truly independent.
Parabhoe’s Bold Plans
Parbhoe has drafted bold plans to fight corruption and provide tangible benefits to citizens if she wins the forthcoming 2025 elections by adopting a Bitcoin standard. The top priority that leads her list is to make Bitcoin legal tender once she takes office. Within the first year, she aims to gradually replace the Suriname dollar with sats and pay all salaries in BTC.
She has plans beyond just making Bitcoin legal tender, including dismantling the central bank, cutting taxes, privatizing public services, issuing national bitcoin bonds, and seeking widespread deregulation.
Parabhoe To Dedicate Rest of Her Life To It!
While many politicians are recently pivoting towards crypto, Parbhoe’s involvement with Bitcoin has been for a decade now. She was driven towards crypto in 2014, where she began engaging in a Telegram group called Whale Pool and attended several crypto conferences.
“I completely dove into the rabbit hole and decided to dedicate the rest of my life to it. If there’s a cause that you could literally die on this hill for, Bitcoin would be it,” she remarked.
Bitcoin to the Rescue
Subsequently, she discovered the weak financial infrastructure in Suriname and no capital markets that was hindering economic growth.
She underscored the need to build an alternative that does not replicate the same issues created by the fiat system and emphasized building a new system on top of what Satoshi Nakamoto started.
She draws inspiration from Nayib Bukele’s success in turning El Salvador from the world’s murder capital into a nation free from widespread crime. She believes that implementing similar plans in Suriname, by leveraging the power of Bitcoin to bring transparency in government budgets, could help dismantle the systematic corruption in the country.
Parbhoe does not view Bitcoin just as a financial tool but as a critical means of creating a transparent, accountable governance system that could revitalize Suriname.
